SAT Math Squares Inscribed in Circles
A square that fits snugly inside a circle is inscribed in the circle. The squareââ¬â¢s corners will touch, but not intersect, the circleââ¬â¢s boundary, and the squareââ¬â¢s diagonal will equal the circleââ¬â¢s diameter. Also, as is true of any squareââ¬â¢s diagonal, it will equal the hypotenuse of a 45à °-45à °-90à ° triangle. GRE questions about squares inscribed in circles are really questions about the hypotenuse of this hidden right triangle. Hereââ¬â¢s an example of an inscribed square problem. A square with side length 4 is inscribed in a circle with center O. What is the area of the circle? 2Ã⬠4Ã⬠8Ã⬠16Ã⬠32Ã⬠To find the circleââ¬â¢s area, youââ¬â¢ll need to find the radius, which is half the diameter. Sketch the figure described in the question, and mark the diagonal of the square and, with that, the diameter of the circle. The diameter/diagonal splits the inscribed square in to two right triangles that sit hypotenuse-to-hypotenuse. Both triangles have legs of 4 (since the square has sides of 4) and interior angles of 45à °, 45à °, and 90à °. For either one, you can find the hypotenuse using the ratio of the triangleââ¬â¢s sides. 45à °-45à °-90à ° Triangle Ratio leg : leg : hypotenuse = s : s : sâËÅ¡2 s = 4 ââ¡â sâËÅ¡2 = 4âËÅ¡2 Now, halve the triangleââ¬â¢s hypotenuse to find the radius of the circle. d = sâËÅ¡2 ââ¡â d = 4âËÅ¡2 r = d2 ââ¡â r =2âËÅ¡2 Finally, plug the circleââ¬â¢s radius in to the area formula. Area of a Circle = Ãâ¬r2 Ãâ¬(2âËÅ¡2)2 Ãâ¬(22)(âËÅ¡22) Ãâ¬(4)(2) 8Ã⬠Thus, (C) is correct. Look out for hidden triangles in SAT geometry questions. If you get a question with a square inscribed in a circle, remember that the diagonal of the square doubles as the hypotenuse of a 45à °-45à °-90à ° triangle. Finding that hypotenuse will likely be the key to answering the question.
